His first profession was that of tailor.
He worked as a tailor in Germany. He said that at the time they would sit on the tailor's table to do their work.
Later he got in the Hotel business.
When he got married, his parents bought him a hotel in Nijmegen. He was an extrovert and quite suited to being a hotel owner-could befriend anyone.
Hotel Pays-Bas, was first taken over by the Germans during WW2 to become their regional headquarters. At that time, from September 1944 to May 1945 he fled with his wife and 5 children via a wood burning taxi (a taxi with a trailer behind it with a wood burning stove to fuel the car because there was no gasoline) from Nijmegen to Breda (70 miles) and moved in with his sister-in-law Riet, brother-in-law Jan and their two kids.
Later on the allied forces bombed the Hotel Pays-Bas and it was completely destroyed.
After the war he worked for a few years as a kitchen supply salesman. He opened a small hotel in an old hospital building; bought a second small hotel in Driesden; and eventually in 1950 with war time reparations he was able to build a restaurant, again called Pays-Bas that mainly catered weddings and parties.
